Did a tune-up on a 97 accord yesterday. 186k miles. I’m guessing original plugs. There was literally a mechanical pencil tip worth of electrode left on all four. I’ve never seen anything like it, and have no idea how it even ran at all. What’s the worst part you have pulled, what made you say “holy shit...”

For me, it was a strut with about 200k on it. The spring fell out of its seat, and the piston wasn’t striking straight up and and down like it should; it was going diagonally, which of course damaged it.

Steering guibo on my e30. Only one bolt out of three was actually holding anything together

No pics but the clutch that was in my car when I bought it was completely shredded. There was no contact between engine and trans. You could put it in gear and rev and the car wouldn’t move. Flywheel wasn’t much better.

I noticed some outward-facing dimples on the ’Murlequin’s bell-housing inspection cover, and decided to take a look behind it. When I dropped the cover down, I saw scratches all over the torque converter, and this bolt fell out:
I immediately started searching online for bolt kits until I found a match. It was one of three flexplate-to-torque converter bolts!

I’ve only taking up wrenching recently, but I liked the utterly shot trunk shock with Made In Western Germany stamped on it. It was installed on a French car, an ‘87 Peugeot 205 CTi.

I wish I had a pic but my fuel door hinge pins, the thin steel of the door had cut almost all the way through them. luckily, you can use galvanized roofing nails to replace them, but jesus that was funny to see.

Zero things! Just nuts and bolts boys, not too hard.
....though if I had to choose something made me scratch my head more than any other, it would be a/c compressor and lines on V8 Esprit

In my first year of wrenching I took the brake drums off the back of a Chevy truck only to find nothing but wadded up chunks of metal.
Had a disco 1 that wouldn’t start, cranked over just fine with no funny noises. Good spark and fuel. No compression on one cylinder. Looking in through the spark plug hole you could see clearly all the way to the oil pan. Piston and rod were in chunks laying down there. Actually this is basically how I got my old range rover too.
S-class, like tavarish’s, had torn lower control arm bushings for so long that the arms wore through the mounting point on the subframe and broke it. This isn’t rare, but it would never happen if people actually took care of their cars, there are very obvious warning signs for quite a while before hand.
There are more, but those are the best ones that come immediately to mind and weren’t caused by a wreck.
